Get out with Mom for this 3 part workshop series! Perfect for Mother's Day, you will both learn how to grow your own cut flower garden. Start your own seeds, grow your blooms, and create a bouquet and centerpiece from your bounty! There are only 8 spaces available for this physically-distanced event, so reserve your spot early! Each event day runs from 10am-12pm at 109 Main St. Canton with Jodie McCord from Great Blue Farms, and light refreshments and drinks are included in the ticket price! Your $15 deposit saves your place, and the remainder of the $95 ($80) is due at the first class. Jodie is a farmer/florist with a life long passion for gardening, flowers and plants. She dreamed of following in her grandparents’ footsteps by farming their tobacco farm someday. With the help of her mother, Susie Denny Beasley, and having generations of flower lovers in her family, Jodie felt flowers would be the perfect crop. Jodie is a native of Macon Co. North Carolina, a master gardener, received a landscape and horticulture certification from Midlands Technical College and has attended many farm and floral design workshops and conferences. The nitty-gritty:

Day 1: Seed Starting 101. Learn how to start, care for and succeed with your own seeds. You'll learn about the supplies needed for successful seed starting, plus how to choose trays, seed blocks, starting soil, lightning, air circulation, and more. We'll go over choosing and starting the right seed for the time of year, for your garden space, and for your desired use.

 

Day 2: Planting, Pinching, and Growing Your Blooms. We'll discuss soil testing and preparation, plus how to grow in a variety of environments, such as mats, paper, raised beds, etc. You'll learn the fundamentals of mulching and irrigation, plant spacing for a cutting garden, care & fertilization, harvesting, and troubleshooting.

Day 3: Care and Hydration of Harvested Blooms. Learn the best practices to prepare your vessel, and the pros and cons of using floral foam vs. chicken wire. We'll discuss when to (or not to) use Flower Food and Quick Dip, plus the basic design elements behind creating a centerpiece and a hand-tied bouquet. All supplies and further reading/resource list are included in the price of the workshop!
